Kooli eelkäija on 15. veebruaril 1844. aastal Viljandis tegevust alustanud erakool, mille rajas Gustav Max Schmidt, algselt oli see saksakeelne poistekool, ainult üksikud eestlased on seal õppinud. Pärast Schmidt'i surma 1874. aastal, jätkas koolijuhtimist mõnda aega L. Krüger. 1875. aastal ostis kooli Liivimaa rüütelkond.
Liivimaa rüütelkond nimetas kooli ümber Liivimaa Maagümnaasiumiks ning ehitati ka uus koolihoone, milles kool tegutseb siiani. Koolimaja hoone projekteeris Riiast pärit arhitekt R. Häusermann. Kooli tegevus lõppes keiser Aleksander III venestamispoliitika tagajärjel, kuna uus kord nägi ette, et sulgeda tuli kõik muukeelsed koolid või viia need üle vene keelsele õppele. Liivimaa rüütelkond otsustas kooli sulgeda. Viimane aktus peeti 22. juunil 1892.
Aastatel 1995–2012 oli kooli nimi Viljandi Maagümnaasium. Seoses koolireformiga muudeti kool alates 1. juulist 2012 põhikooliks ja hakkas kandma nime Viljandi Kesklinna Kool.

School is a precursor to the 15th February 1844 in Viljandi started to operate a private school that was founded by Gustav Max Schmidt . The school was a German boys' school, there learned only a few estonians.After Schmidt's death in 1874 L. Kruger continued its leadership for awhile. In 1875 the school was bought by the Livonia knighthood.
Livonia knighthood named the school to Liivimaa Maagümnaasium and built a new school building in which the school is still working . The schoolhouse building was designed by architect R. Häusermann who was from Riga . School ceased Emperor Alexander III of Russification as the new regime provided that all other languages had to be shut down schools or bring them to the study of Russian language. Livonian knighthood decided to close the school. The last ceremony was held on 22 June in 1892.
During the period 1995-2012 the s name of the school was Viljandi Maagümnaasium . The school was changed from 1 July 2012 to Viljandi Kesklinnakool
