Viljandi mõis rajati arvatavasti juba 13. sajandil. Rootsi kuningas Gustav II Adolf kiniks 17. sajandil Viljandi linna koos ümbritsevate maadega riigi marsall Jakob de la Gardie'le.

1878-1880 püstitas Oswald von Ungern-Stenberg uue suure härrastemaja. Neorenessanslike stiilielementidega kivist mõisahoone projekteeris arhitekt Friedrich Modi.

Pärast Eesti Vabariigi maareformi paigutati härrastemajja politsei peakorter. Alates aastas 2002 kuulub mõis AS Acropolis’ele.

Praegu on hoone renoveerimisel ja sinna tuleb hotell-pansionaat seenioridele.

The manor of Viljandi’s address: Tasuja pst. 4, Viljandi, 71020.
The mansion was built in the 13th century. The Swedish king Gustav II Adolf gave the town with its surrounding land as a present to the state marshal Jacob de la Gardie.
From 1878–1880 Oswald von Ungern-Sternberg established a new big manor house in the trend of Neo-Renaissance. The architect of the building was Friedrich Modi.
Since 2002 the manor is in the property of AS Acropolis. Right now the building is under construction and it will be a hotel-boarding house for seniors.
